Richland grad weighing his baseball future

JOHNSTOWN — Richland graduate Austin Urban isn’t sure where he’ll be in August.

The former AAABA League standout pitcher might reach a deal with the Chicago Cubs, who selected him in the 41st round of the Major League  Baseball first-year player draft in June. A Cubs scout was scheduled to watch Urban pitch Sunday in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League in Maryland.

If his pro aspirations don’t materialize for a second straight year – the Baltimore Orioles drafted Urban in the 27th round in 2010 but the two sides failed to agree on a contract – Urban most likely will be in Johnstown for the AAABA Tournament on Aug. 8. Only instead of pitching for Delweld, the right-hander will wear the uniform of defending champion and perennial power Youse’s Maryland Orioles of Baltimore.

Urban also must consider whether he’ll return to Des Moines, Iowa, later in the month to continue his college career at Des Moines Area Community College.

In other words, Urban is dealing with a lot of scenarios.

“It’s been stressful again,” Urban said, recalling a similar experience a year ago during negotiations with the Baltimore Orioles that lasted right up to the mid-August signing deadline before falling through. “It’s been fun, but it’s been stressful with everything going on and my not knowing if I’m going to go back to school. I’m trying to enjoy myself. I’ve got to just go out and play.”
