UPJ, Mount men victorious

JOHNSTOWN — Bill Luther scored a career-high 34 points and hit 10 3-pointers to tie the Pitt-Johnstown single-game record, and Nick Novak added 30 points to lead the Mountain Cats to a 106-94 nonconference victory over Bowie State  on Wednesday at the Sports Center.

Pitt-Johnstown improved to 5-2.

Luther, who shot 11 of 14 from the field, connected on 10 of 13 from 3-point range to tie Jordan Miller’s single-game record set exactly three years ago to the day. Miller made 10 against Salem International University on Dec. 5, 2009.

Luther’s 34 points paced four Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures. Novak had 30 points, including 11 of 15 from the free-throw line. Novak also had a game-high eight assists, six rebounds and five steals, while Miller finished with 16 points (four 3-pointers), four rebounds and six assists.

Andrew Cressler collected a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to round out the double figure scorers.

Byron Westmoreland, who leads NCAA Division II in scoring at 28.4 points per game, and Najee White each scored 26 points for Bowie State, which dropped to 3-5 on the season.

• Mount Aloysius 91, Frostburg State 85: In Frostburg, Md., Tanner Thomas scored 28 points and Jeff Stem added 21 as Mount Aloysius improved to 5-1 on the season.

Dameon Turner had 15 points for the Mounties, who struggled from 3-point range – shooting just 3 of 16 from behind the arc – but were successful at getting to the rim and shot 58 percent overall from the field.

Mount Aloysius held a 42-37 halftime advantage, but exploded with a 15-6 run to start the second half.

The Mount led by 14 points with 2 minutes to go in the contest.

A string of Frostburg State 3-pointers pulled the Bobcats within three points. But clutch Mount Aloysius free- throw shooting sealed the win.

Christian Jackson topped Frostburg with 21 points.

Mount Aloysius held Jackson, Frostburg’s leading scorer with a 26.5 points per game average, without a single field goal in the first half.
