HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Central Cambria 21

Cambria Heights 6 (4)


PATTON – Aimee Espe had a three-run homer, Breanne James smacked a three-run homer and MacKenzie Magley had two hits and drove in two.

Espe and James each finished with four RBIs.

Red Devils junior Taylor Swatsworth had two hits to extend her hitting streak to 25 consecutive games, breaking the record set by Jess Kemock in 2007. The streak dates to the last game of her freshman season in 2008.

Amanda Bobby homered, scored twice and drove in two for Cambria Heights.

Bishop Carroll 11

Bishop Guilfoyle 6


EBENSBURG – Steph Gerber hit a solo home run, and Lauren Bassaro had two hits and three RBIs as undefeated Bishop Carroll beat visiting Bishop Guilfoyle.

Ashley Shook and Kayla Legros each had two singles and two RBIs for the winners.

Sarah Posser tripled and drove in three runs for Guilfoyle. Emma Baughman had two singles and drove in a run.

Blacklick Valley 13

Conemaugh Valley 3


NANTY GLO – Lauren Wiegman went 4-for-4 with a double, Allison Verba and Tiana Paskowski each went 2-for-3 with a double, and Jenna Skubik doubled as Blacklick Valley beat visiting Conemaugh Valley.

Blacklick’s Carly Smith doubled, and Hailee Scott went 2-for 3. Conemaugh Valley’s Holly Glass tripled.

Conemaugh Twp. 5, Windber 1

DAVIDSVILLE – Brittany Siehl picked up her first win, striking out eight and scattering six hits in a win over visiting Windber. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Brittany Kettner went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles for Township. Audra Zaman and Katie Reckner each went 2-for-3 with a double.

Kayla Kormanik went 2-for-3 and Brooke Schreyer scored the lone run for Windber.

Allyssa Ott doubled for the Ramblers.

Portage 5, North Star 4

PORTAGE – Portage edged out North Star in a seesaw battle. Chelsea Danel went 3-for-4 and scored a run for the Cougars. Katie Hochrein went 3-for-3 and Amy Crum went 3-for-4 to lead the Mustangs.

Forest Hills 9, Penn Cambria 4

SIDMAN – Kayleigh Wolfhope had two hits, including a double, and struck out 11 to lead Forest Hills.

Gab Mickus added three hits for the Rangers, while Megan Gould had two hits, including a double.

Kate Reese and two hits and struck out seven for the Panthers.

Richland 20, Johnstown 2

Kayleigh Hudak went 4-for-5 with a double and scored four runs to lead Richland in a one-sided game at Johnstown.

The Trojans committed 11 errors.

Winning pitcher Nicki Mihalik was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and catcher Laruen Keffer was

2-for-3 with two runs. Emma Tessari was 2-for-4 and Laura Koshute was 3-for-4 with three runs.

Kiersten Szczur singled and doubled for two RBIs to lead the hosts. Brittany Zucco singled and scored while Alex Teeter walked twice and scored a run.

Somerset 8, Westmont 3

SOMERSET – Nicole Shaffer’s fourth-inning grand slam broke the game open for Somerset.

Jaime Emert singled, doubled and struck out six Westmont batters. Ashley Humbert had three singles and Nicole Landis doubled.

Westmont’s Gina Rievel had two hits, and Angela Sutt had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

Shade 14, Ferndale 9

Erin Spinelli had two hits and scored three runs as Shade beat host Ferndale.

Casey Roberts had two hits, including an inside-the-park homer. She had two runs. Kelly Shaw doubled and scored twice.

Ferndale’s Melanie Bremer had three hits and scored three runs. Ashley Smith had two hits and two runs. Brittany Eisenhuth had two hits.

Forest Hills 11

Penn Cambria 1 (5)


CRESSON – Luke Gdula was 2-for-4 with two runs and Justin Gdula was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs to lead Forest Hills.

Colin Gdula drove in two runs and Chris Gallaher scored two. Joe McCall went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Pat Meyers was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Panthers. Anthony Guzik and Nick Meyers each were 1-for-2 and Nick Meyers scored a run.

McConnellsburg 10, Shade 4

McCONNELLSBURG – McConnellsburg’s Nathan Shope picked up a win by striking out nine and scattering five hits over 52/3 innings. He also doubled and scored twice.

Tanner Shoop hit a solo homer in the second inning for the Spartans.

Brock Medva led the Panthers with two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Brett Hart and Mike Shaw each collected two hits.

Portage 6, North Star 2

PORTAGE – Scott Nolan singled twice and drove in three runs, and winning pitcher Taylor Swires had a two-run single in host Portage’s win over North Star.

Andrew D. Maul pitched 22/3 innings, striking out five batters.

North Star’s Max Strasiser singled, doubled and scored once. Tony Strasiser had two singles and drove in a pair for the Cougars.

Central Cambria 17

Cambria Heights 7


EBENSBURG – Jay Ostinowsky had two hits and drove in four runs as Central Cambria defeated visiting Cambria Heights.

The Red Devils’ Mario Deyulis and Luke Trotz each had three hits. Heights’ Caleb Vescovi tripled and drove in three runs.

Conemaugh Twp. 9, Windber 3

DAVIDSVILLE – Kyle Zambanini and Jordan Schroyer each had two hits, and Joe Roman and Dan Zambanini each drove in two. Kyle Zambanini pitched 51/3 innings with nine strikeouts and one earned run.

Justin Bush had two hits and drove in a run for Windber.

Somerset 14, Westmont 9

Devon Pritts went 3-for-5 with a single, double, triple and three RBIs while Drew Hemminger was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs to lead visiting Somerset.

Tyler Kleinmeyer led Westmont, going 3-for-5, with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs, and teammate Ben Legath singled and doubled for two RBIs.

Richland 14, Johnstown 0

Austin Urban no-hit Johnstown in a five-inning game, and Richland’s bats produced 11 hits and

14 runs in a win over the visiting Trojans.

Urban struck out nine and walked none. Zach Solarczyck had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Rams. Solarczyck, Ryan Sylvia and Tyler Crawford each doubled. Urban had a triple among his two hits and he scored three runs and drove in two.

Sylvia and Eric Montag each drove in a pair.

Conemaugh Valley 12

Blacklick Valley 2


NANTY GLO – Designated hitter John Williams went 2-for-3 and scored three runs to lead Conemaugh Valley. Jimmy Britton was also 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for the Blue Jays.

Caleb Palko’s 1-for-2 effort resulted in a RBI for Blacklick.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

UPJ sweeps Salem International


Matt Whiteman pitched six scoreless innings, and Nick Barbera belted a three-run homer to lead Pitt-Johnstown to an 8-0 victory over Salem International (W.Va.) University in Tuesday’s doubleheader opener at Point Stadium.

The Mountain Cats completed the sweep with a 12-8 win in Game 2 behind four hits from Andy Rubal and three hits, including a solo home run, by Drew Westover.

Pitt-Johnstown has won nine of its last 11 and improved to 17-11.

The Mountain Cats will host a doubleheader against Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va.) College today at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium.
