Pittsburgh bank robbed despite police surveillance

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police are sure they know who robbed four banks in the city’s trendy Squirrel Hill neighborhood this year, including the same branch twice in one week. Now all they have to do is catch him.

Police acknowledge the suspect, 33-year-old Joseph Guiney, robbed the Citizens Bank branch again Saturday, even though it was one of seven branches under surveillance by roving patrols that day.

Guiney reportedly pointed a pistol at a teller and said, “Give it up. You gave it up last week, so give it up again.” Police say he was referring to a robbery at the same branch on Nov. 9.

Police say Guiney is armed and dangerous and that the string of four robberies began March 27. The other three have been robbed since Halloween.
