Computer glitch results in free parking

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburghers enjoyed a holiday from paying for parking spaces after a computer glitch mistakenly told them free parking was available on Presidents’ Day.

David Onorato, who heads the city’s parking authority, says in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report that hew computerized pay stations mistakenly told motorists they didn’t have to pay because of the holiday. That wasn’t true because Monday wasn’t a city holiday, despite being a federal holiday.

Still, the parking authority opted not to enforce parking meter limits because officials couldn’t be sure when some people had parked in the spaces once they were given the false message that parking was free. The message was removed Monday morning.

Officials couldn’t immediately say how much money the city lost because of the mistake.
