PAULSBORO, N.J. —
A freight train derailed Friday on a railroad bridge that has had problems before, toppling tanker cars partially into a creek and causing a leak of hazardous gas that was blamed for sickening dozens of people, authorities said.
The accident happened just after 7 a.m. when a train with two locomotives, 83 freight cars and a caboose made its way from Camden to the industrial town of Paulsboro, just across the river from Philadelphia International Airport.
Cars from a train operated by CSX went off the rails on a swing-style bridge, owned by Conrail, over Mantua Creek. Seven cars derailed, including four tankers that were partially in the creek.
One tanker containing 25,000 gallons of vinyl chloride was sliced open in the accident and some of the gas spewed into the air, while the rest turned into a solid and settled into the bottom of the tanker.
Cash-strapped college may go coed
CHAMBERSBURG – Trustees at Wilson College in Chambersburg plan to vote today on whether to convert the school to a fully coeducational institution.
The liberal arts school founded in 1869 has run operational budget deficits in three of the past four years, and has a
$31 million debt, $10 million in deferred maintenance and a $12 million library project.
Enrollment is about 700.
The school now allows men to be students if they are children of staff or at least 22 years old, and about 11 percent of students are undergraduate men.
Pageants open in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH – Young women from all across the state arrived in Pittsburgh on Friday for the Miss Pennsylvania USA 2013 and Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA 2013 pageants.
The Miss Pennsylvania Teen division is for ages 14 to 18 years old, and the Miss Pennsylvania division is for ages 18 to 26 years old. An 18-year-old can only compete in one contest at a time.
Amber-Joi Watkins, Miss Pennsylvania USA 2011 and Gina Cerilli, Miss Pennsylvania USA 2010 will be at the event to crown the new winner. Julia Belechak, Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA 2012, will be on hand to crown the new teen winner.
The pageant is being held at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport hotel.
