The Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling boom is causing a southwestern Pennsylvania tourist train to go bust.
The Fayette Central Railroad is going out of business at year's end because it can't lease enough track time. The Herald-Standard of Uniontown reports Monday the railroad is citing a "sharp increase in the volume of freight traffic" as the reason for going out of business.
The Fayette Central Railroad began running on Memorial Day 2006 out of Uniontown.
The nonprofit has leased track space from the Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad, a short line owned by Carload Express that provides mostly freight services.
The tourist train's website says it has already cut back to Saturday only service and will not be able to offer even that because of the glut of freight traffic on the tracks.
