5 things to know for today in Pennsylvania news

Your daily look at late-breaking news, upcoming events and stories that will be talked about in Pennsylvania on Thursday:

1. FIRST PA. DEATH REPORTED IN STORM

State police are reporting the first death from Wednesday’s fierce winter storm. They say a man was killed on Interstate 78 near Allentown after stopping to check on a disabled vehicle Wednesday night. And authorities say a truck driver was injured on I-78 in Bethlehem when he swerved to avoid a wreck and jackknifed over a highway bridge.

2. IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED...

About 230 people who spent the night at Philadelphia International Airport will try again to get out Thursday. The skies have cleared in the region after a fierce winter storm grounded travelers in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and elsewhere.

3. LAND SAFELY, THEN WAIT

Officials say a flight that landed safely in Pittsburgh during the storm Wednesday night got stuck in snow for about two hours on the tarmac.  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the American Airlines flight arrived between 8 and 9 p.m., but then ran over a snow patch and got stuck.

4. STORES RECALLING PA. FIRM’S BABY RECLINERS

Four national retailers are recalling more than 150,000 Nap Nanny baby recliners after at least five infant deaths and dozens of reports of children nearly falling out of the recliners. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the products are made by Berwyn-based Baby Matters.

5. BACK TO WORK

The Labor Department says unemployment claims have dropped to the lowest level in nearly five years, a sign the job market is on the mend.  But there could be a catch. A spokesman says 19 states provided only estimates because of the Christmas holidays. And unemployment remains relatively high at 7.7 percent last month.
