1. CASEY, SMITH SET FOR FIRST DEBATE IN U.S. SENATE RACE
Bob Casey, the incumbent Democrat and Republican challenger Tom Smith will record the debate this morning at WPVI-TV in Philadelphia. The debate will air Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia and may be rebroadcast after that. Casey is running for a second term against Smith, a tea party favorite.
2. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN TO MAKE TWO APPEARANCES IN PITTSBURGH ON SATURDAY
A few hours before his sold-out concert at Consol Energy Center downtown, Springsteen will make a get-out-the-vote appearance in support of President Barack Obama at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall. Springsteen has performed a handful of songs at similar Obama events in Iowa, Ohio and Virginia.
3. NCAA STATISTICS SHOW PENN STATE’S FOOTBALL TEAM GRADUATES 91 PERCENT OF ITS PLAYERS, SEVENTH BEST IN USA
In the Big Ten, Penn State trailed only Northwestern, which had a graduation rate of 97 percent. The major college average was 68 percent. Overall, Penn State athletes graduate at an 88 percent clip, higher than the 80 percent national average.
4. 24-YEAR-OLD COUSIN CHARGED WITH SHOOTING 8-YEAR-OLD COSTUMED GIRL HE THOUGHT WAS A SKUNK
The girl remains in critical condition since she was shot once Saturday night in western Pennsylvania with a 12-gauge shotgun. She was wearing a black costume and a black hat with a white feather.
5. JUVENILE MURDERERS WON’T ALWAYS FACE LIFE IN PRISON IN PENNSYVANIA
The new law signed by Gov. Tom Corbett sets prison penalties of at least 20 years for murderers 14 or younger, and at least 25 years for older teens. The U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year deemed mandatory life sentences without parole cruel and unusual punishment for minors.
