PITTSBURGH —
Authorities say a worker has been electrocuted at Carnegie Mellon University.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that the death occurred Tuesday morning.
The man was identified as 59-year-old Harold E. Taylor Jr., who worked for an outside contractor, Cleveland-based Eaton Electrical Co.
Carnegie Mellon said the industrial accident happened in an electrical distribution room and expressed condolences.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Carnegie Mellon are investigating.
Eaton spokesman Mark Horner said the company is cooperating with investigators and said their hearts go out to Taylor’s family, friends and co-workers.
Girl Scouts robbed of $20 at market, authorities say
BERWYN – Police are investigating the strong-arm robbery of Girl Scouts who were selling cookies at a suburban Philadelphia supermarket.
The theft happened at a Pathmark store
in Tredyffrin Township around 5 p.m. Sunday.
WPVI-TV reported the thief reached into a cash box containing the Scouts’ cookie money. He got $20 before the girls closed the box.
Police said the suspect then fled to the back of the building and drove off.
State jobless rate rises in December, payrolls shrink
HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s payrolls shrank and its unemployment rate rose slightly in December, a month after reporting the biggest monthly drop in joblessness in nearly 30 years.
Meanwhile, a separate survey found more people working or seeking work.
The state Department of Labor and Industry said December’s unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent.
The national unemployment rate is 7.8 percent.
A survey of Pennsylvania households found that the number of people working
or seeking work grew by 17,000, while the number of people working grew by 12,000.
A separate survey of employers showed payrolls dropped by almost 5,000 jobs to about 5.75 million total nonfarm jobs.
Pennsylvania payrolls dropped below 5.6 million after the recession began in December 2007.
Payrolls remain below 2008’s peak of 5.8 million jobs.
Soda spills, freezes on road after rigs crash
READING – Everyone knows soda can
be bad for your teeth. Sometimes, it can apparently threaten the morning commute, too.
Police said two tractor-trailers collided on U.S. Route 422 outside Reading around
12:40 a.m. Tuesday.
The Reading Eagle reported one of the trucks was carrying 2-liter bottles of soda.
Hundreds of gallons of sugary drink spilled onto the highway and froze in the frigid early morning temperatures.
Those slick conditions from the crash ended up shutting down the roadway in Exeter Township for more than five hours.
Traffic was detoured until the road reopened shortly after 6 a.m.
