Much of Sandusky evidence unused

PHILADELPHIA – A prosecutor in the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse case said a “great deal” of “highly incriminating” evidence wasn’t presented to the jury that convicted him, according to a post-trial hearing transcript unsealed Wednesday.

Chief Deputy Attorney General Frank Fina did not elaborate on the additional evidence at the hearing held four days after the former Penn State assistant football coach was convicted. But, Fina said, it wouldn’t be in Sandusky’s best interest to have more information revealed.

“I’m talking about incriminating information beyond that which was presented during the trial,” Fina told a judge.

The hearing concerned an audio recording of Sandusky’s adopted son, Matt, claiming he was abused by Sandusky as a boy after meeting the coach through his charity, The Second Mile.

Matt Sandusky’s attorneys confirmed that a recording broadcast by NBC was their client making accusations of abuse to investigators even as Jerry Sandusky’s trial was ongoing.

Coroner: Cop killer fatally shot himself

PITTSBURGH – A mentally ill heroin addict who gunned down a Westmoreland County police officer in October fatally shot himself before he was hit by two bullets fired by another officer, a coroner ruled Wednesday.

County Coroner Kenneth Bacha determined Charles Post, 33, of Lower Burrell, shot himself in the head but was still in a squatted position with his gun clenched in his hand when New Kensington police Sgt. John Olearchick fired two shots moments later, hitting Post in the chest and upper abdomen.

Bacha said the police gunshots could have killed Post had he not died instantly from his self-inflicted wound. Toxicology tests showed Post had several illegal and legal drugs in his system at the time, Bacha said.

Lower Burrell police Officer Derek Kotecki, 40, was killed by Post while trying to arrest him for an earlier shooting.

Penn State to host child sex-abuse panel

PHILADELPHIA – Penn State announced Wednesday that it will host a national child sex-abuse conference in the fall, the latest in a series of initiatives designed to raise awareness of the issue and help the university recover from a devastating molestation scandal.

The gathering scheduled for Oct. 29-30 in State College will feature academic and clinical experts on childhood molestation and trauma, as well as remarks by retired boxing champ Sugar Ray Leonard and former kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart, both of whom suffered sexual abuse.
