Thunder in the Valley

Dry weather is in forecast

JOHNSTOWN — When bikers roll into Johnstown for this year’s Thunder in the Valley, they likely be greeted by clear skies, sunshine, and – most importantly for safety reasons – dry roads.

According to the National Weather Service, the region is expected to experience varying high temperatures between the mid-70s to upper-80s from today through Sunday. There will be a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms today and Friday. Little to no precipitation is anticipated for Saturday or Sunday.

“So far, it seems to look pretty good,” said Lisa Rager, executive director of the Greater Johnstown/Cambria County Convention & Visitors Bureau, which annually organizes the event.

“It looks like the hot, humid weather is expected to clear. ... It will be kind of nice to get the high humidity out of the way and then be on to a really, really nice Thunder.”

Having pleasant, dry weather is an obvious benefit for any outdoor festival. However, it takes on an added importance when thousands of motorcycle riders fill the roads. Any motorcyclist caught in the rain is advised to immediately seek shelter, as opposed to running the risk of traveling along slick surfaces.

“The best thing to do is to stop under an underpass and let it pass,” Rager said. “Around here, some of the storms just come and go.”

Rager also reminded automobile drivers to be cognizant of the motorcycles, especially if conditions turn bad.

“We urge vehicle drivers

just please, please be on the lookout for motorcycles,” said Rager.

“Put the cellphone away, watch for motorcycles, watch your intersections.”

Rainy weather has occasionally dampened Thunder activities, including live music performances, in the past.

This year, though, organizers will be able to use the new Peoples Natural Gas Park, which officially opened earlier this month.

More than a dozen shows are scheduled to take place at the facility that is covered by an overhang. Numerous acts will also perform inside the train station.

“We do have more opportunities now for people to get out of the weather,” Rager added.

  • JMD_4556.JPG [VIDEO] Greenhouse Park bash: ‘They love to have fun’

Along with Thunder in the Valley come thousands of leathered bikers with grizzled, twisted beards and tattoos to make your grandmother faint. For 10 years, the local chapters of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) have packed them all into Greenhouse Park for what’s now called “Thunderbash.”
The rumor mill may suggest that all that gasoline and light beer in such a small area could become a powder keg of debauchery and drunken fisticuffs. But what really happens after the sun goes down at Greenhouse Park’s “best adult party in town”?
