Hansons returning to arena

JOHNSTOWN — The infamous Hanson Brothers will return to the Cambria County War Memorial next month for “Hanson Brothers Night” at a Johnstown Tomahawks game against the Jamestown Ironmen on Dec. 14.

The Hansons made their motion picture debut in the 1977 Paul Newman movie “Slap Shot,” which was filmed in Johnstown a year earlier and based on the 1974-75 championship Johnstown Jets team.

Real-life brothers Steve, Jeff and Jack Carlson inspired the Hansons.

The Carlson brothers were stars on a Jets team that went from worst to first with a rally through the second half of the professional North American Hockey League season and in the Lockhart Cup playoffs.

When Jack Carlson was called up to the WHA Minnesota Fighting Saints, the movie crew called on Johnstown Jets tough guy Dave Hanson to fill in the role as the third brother in the movie. Ironically, the movie brothers were named Hanson, and the character based on the real-life Hanson was named Carlson.

“We are thrilled to have Dave Hanson and Steve and Jeff Carlson attend our Dec. 14 game,” said Tomahawks Director of Business Operations Jean Desrochers.  “ ‘Slap Shot,’ and Steve, Jeff, and Dave’s passion for the game helped to put the spotlight on hockey in Johnstown and inspired a whole new generation of hockey fans in this city. They remain an important part of the cultural history here, and the return of hockey to Johnstown goes hand-in-hand with the return of the Hansons.”

The Hanson event will begin on Dec. 13 as the Junior A Tier II NAHL team will host a special screening of “Slap Shot” at Westwood Plaza Theatre at 7 p.m. Steve Carlson will hold a question and answer session about the making of the movie. Only 190 seats are available and should be reserved through the Tomahawks office.

The result of Sunday’s NAHL Robertson Cup Playoff game wasn’t the one that the Johnstown Tomahawks wanted. Port Huron’s Ian Miller made sure of that just 3:28 into overtime.

The Johnstown Tomahawks played winning hockey on the road throughout the 2012-13 NAHL season, but that fact did little to quell the team’s collective apprehension as it headed into Game 2 of the North Division play-in series Friday night at Port Huron.

  • Tomahawks shut out in playoff opener

A trio of third-period goals proved too much for the Johnstown Tomahawks to match as the Port Huron Fighting Falcons took Game 1 of the NAHL’s Robertson Cup North Division Play-in series by a 3-0 tally Thursday at McMorran Arena.
The Fighting Falcons, the North Division’s fourth seed, used goals from Ryan Nick, Mitch Maloney and Rick DeRosa to grab a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.

  • Tomahawks planning on short series

No offense hockey fans, but the Johnstown Tomahawks aren’t planning to play a home game in front of a potentially sold-out, sure-to-be-raucous crowd Sunday afternoon at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
The goal for these Tomahawks, who qualified for the NAHL playoffs in their inaugural season in the Flood City, is to win two games at Port Huron (Mich.) starting tonight and advance in the best-of-3 North Division play-in series.

  • Johnstown to open playoffs at Port Huron

If the Johnstown Tomahawks are looking to bring postseason hockey back to Cambria County War Memorial, they’ll have to at the very least forge a split of the first two games of their best-of-3 play-in series against fourth-place Port Huron.
