SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. —
The Soo Eagles netted four unanswered goals to beat the Johnstown Tomahawks 4-1 on Saturday night in a NAHL North Division game in front of 575 fans at Pullar Stadium.
Neither team scored in the opening period.
The Tomahawks got on the scoreboard first via Jordan Watt’s unassisted goal 1:26 into the second period.
But Soo bounced back with goals by Cody Von Rueden at 4:05, and Eric Rivard at 16:57.
The Eagles padded the margin with third-period tallies by Michael Covach at 4:04, and Michal Toman at 17:35.
Rivard finished with a goal, two assists and three points.
Soo’s Jared VanWormer had three assists.
Tomahawks’ goaltender Chris Truehl had 44 saves on 48 shots. Soo netminder Zach Nagelvoort stopped 19 of 20 Tomahawks shots on goal.
Johnstown misfired on five power-play opportunities. Soo went 1 of 6.
The fifth-place Tomahawks dropped both games against Soo this weekend after falling in a 5-4 overtime shootout on Friday.
Through their first 12 games of the Junior A Tier II season, the Tomahawks are even with a 4-4-4 record and 12 points.
Port Huron leads the North Division with nine wins and is tied for first place with Jamestown
(8-2-2) at 18 points. Kalamazoo and Soo each have 16 points in the eight-team division.
The Tomahawks have a game at 4 p.m. today at Michigan. They return home to face Soo for games Friday and Saturday.
