The road hasn’t been a kind place for the Johnstown Tomahawks. At least it wasn’t until Sunday afternoon.
Jesse Kessler and Cody Gylling both finished with three points as the Tomahawks picked up their first road win of the season not involving games at the NAHL showcase by a 4-2 margin over Michigan at Perani Arena.
The win moved the Tomahawks (5-4-2, 14 points) within four points of first-place in the North Division. The Warriors (2-10, 4 points) have lost six consecutive games.
Johnstown has earned points in six of its past seven games and gone 4-1-2 during the stretch.
Gylling finished with three assists and he now leads the Tomahawks in scoring with 12 points. Kessler scored one of two power-play goals for Johnstown and he added two assists.
Collin Brennen, acquired in a trade with the Janesville Jets at the end of September, made his first start and played well. He stopped 27 of 29 shots.
The Tomahawks were also strong against the power play as they killed four of five penalties and capitalized on two of six power-play scoring chances.
Both power-play goals came in the second period with Johnstown leading, 2-0. Kessler’s goal came on a cross-ice pass from Gylling and he moved in off the left point to score at 9:27. Just over five minutes later, Gylling set up Jordan Watt.
Johnstown’s power play is 14 of 74 (18.9 percent) on the season, which is tied for seventh in the NAHL.
The Tomahawks have also scored the first goal in nine of their past 10 games.
Michigan scored both of its goals during the third period – the first coming from Connor Lyons at the 4:15 mark. The Warriorrs outshot the Tomahawks, 14-6, in the final period.
The Tomahawks head home to the Cambria County War Memorial Arena to play Sault Ste. Marie on Friday and Saturday.

Tomahawks shut out in playoff opener

The goal for these Tomahawks, who qualified for the NAHL playoffs in their inaugural season in the Flood City, is to win two games at Port Huron (Mich.) starting tonight and advance in the best-of-3 North Division play-in series. -
