BLAINE, Minn. —
The Johnstown Tomahawks certainly have a flare for the dramatic.
A night after the junior league team rallied for its first-ever victory in a shootout, coach Jason Spence’s squad earned a point by scoring with 7 seconds remaining in the third period before losing 5-4 in overtime to the Austin (Minn.) Bruins in the North American Hockey League Showcase.
Austin’s Riley Colvard appeared to score the game-winner with 38 seconds left in regulation, but the Tomahawks’ Mitch Kontny poked home a rebound with 7 seconds left to send it to overtime. Colvard weaved past two Tomahawks and beat goalie Chris Truehl with 1:01 left in the extra period.
Cody Gylling scored twice for the Tomahawks, who fell to 1-2-2 on the season.
Brandon Brossoit also found the net for Johnstown.
Jordan Watt had two assists while Casey Nelson and Cobi Mass-Smith each had one.
Devin Mitchell and Jake Flynn each scored in the second period to erase Johnstown’s early lead.
The Tomahawks will wrap up play in the Showcase by taking on the Corpus Christi IceRays at 1:45 this afternoon.
