Tomahawks’ Nelson decides

Johnstown Tomahawks defenseman Casey Nelson has verbally committed to continue his career at Minnesota State University at Mankato. Nelson will join the NCAA Division I Mavericks for the 2013-2014 season.

“I committed to Mankato for so many reasons,” said Nelson, a native of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. “The coaches are great and the university itself is wonderful – I like everything both the school and the hockey program have to offer.”

The 6-2, 180-pound defenseman has played in all 54 games this season and has 22 assists and 32 points (10-22-32). He leads all Tomahawks defensemen in points and has consistently been among the top 10 defensive point leaders in the NAHL, currently tied at fifth place. He also leads all league defensemen in shots by a large margin with 189.

BASEBALL

Mount Aloysius splits twin bill

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Mount Aloysius routed Emerson College 17-1 and fell 10-2 to York in a doubleheader on Wednesday at the Ripken Complex.

In the win over Emerson, Luke Szymanski went 4 for 6 with four runs and four RBIs. Ian Helsel was 2 for 3 with four runs. Aaron Kovach went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

SOFTBALL

Mounties score two victories

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Mount Aloysius won a pair of games on Tuesday at the NCSI Tournament.

In the opener, Kelsey Ickes struck out seven in a 4-1 victory over RMU of Springfield, Ill.

Emily Gearhart and Morgan Paynter had home runs.

In the second game, Mount Aloysius went nine innings before securing a 4-3 win over Lycoming College.

Taylor Mansfield got the win for the Mounties, who got a 3 for 3 showing and game-winning RBI from Jalissa Westover.

Marrisa Ayers was 2 for 3 and Gearhart had a triple as Mount Aloysius improved to 3-1.

Tomahawks shut out in playoff opener
A trio of third-period goals proved too much for the Johnstown Tomahawks to match as the Port Huron Fighting Falcons took Game 1 of the NAHL’s Robertson Cup North Division Play-in series by a 3-0 tally Thursday at McMorran Arena.
The Fighting Falcons, the North Division’s fourth seed, used goals from Ryan Nick, Mitch Maloney and Rick DeRosa to grab a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.

Tomahawks planning on short series
No offense hockey fans, but the Johnstown Tomahawks aren’t planning to play a home game in front of a potentially sold-out, sure-to-be-raucous crowd Sunday afternoon at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
The goal for these Tomahawks, who qualified for the NAHL playoffs in their inaugural season in the Flood City, is to win two games at Port Huron (Mich.) starting tonight and advance in the best-of-3 North Division play-in series.
