United Way: Charity’s fundraising ambitious despite tough economy

Generosity is prevailing during uncertain economic times.

United Way of the Laurel Highlands said Monday it has raised little more than half of its $1.1 million annual fundraising goal, putting it on pace with last year’s campaign.

After raising $1.024 million in 2007, the organization increased its goal by 10 percent this year.

“In difficult times, we know the needs of the community increase as well,” said Bill McKinney, president of the United Way of the Laurel Highlands, which provides support to

25 nonprofit agencies in Cambria and Somerset counties.

“This area is just amazing,” he added.

“When people are in need, they really do step up and contribute.”

The fundraising campaign began in late August and typically runs through November. A progress report will be issued Nov. 20, McKinney said.

“We’re right on track with where we were last year at this point in time,” he said, adding the organization has pledges and contributions totaling $561,000.

Like telethons, McKinney said the bulk of fundraising usually comes toward the end.

More than 500 businesses in the two counties participate in the campaign, which relies on a strong, dedicated core of volunteers.

While some businesses and organizations, such as Penn Highlands Community College, raise funds for three months, McKinney said others, including DRS Technologies, have shorter, more concentrated campaign drives.
