HOMER CITY —
Homer-Center used a solid ground game on offense and forced four turnovers on defense in a 25-18 victory over visiting Northern Cambria on Friday night.
The Wildcats (2-0) beat the Colts (1-1) a week after Northern Cambria had posted a big upset win over then state-ranked Penns Manor.
The Heritage Conference match up went back-and-forth.
Homer-Center led 6-0 after Aaron Berezansky’s 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but Northern Cambria bounced back to tie the game via Adam Polites’ 22-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jeff Hogan.
The hosts led 12-6 after one quarter as Levi McCracken took a 42-yard pass from Berezansky into the end zone.
Each team added a second-quarter touchdown.
Northern Cambria’s Polites caught an 8-yard touchdown from Hogan to knot the score at 12.
The Wildcats Ean Lee ran 9 yards for a touchdown, and Mike Newhouse booted the extra point to set a 19-12 halftime score.
Newhouse’s 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put Homer-Center in front 25-12.
Hogan set the final with a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The statistics indicated how tight of a game it was. Northern Cambria had 238 total yards on offense – 5 more than the Wildcats.
Homer-Center rushed for 161 yards to 74 by Northern Cambria. The Colts’ Hogan passed for 164 yards to 72 by the Wildcats. NC’s Polites caught five passes for 121 yards.
Northern Cambria fumbled three times, losing two of those miscues.
Homer-Center had two interceptions, one apiece by Jared Nealey and Anthony Caruso.

Emergency response team hones skills at training camp
Almost certainly, no Cambria County Special Emergency Response Team members will ever be called upon to create a small bridge out of two pieces of wood and rope, use the newfangled walkway to get a group of individuals from one point to another, pick up an object at the end of the course and then figure out a way back to the starting point.
But the skills SERT officers gain by participating in drills like those – leadership, teamwork, trust and creativity – can be invaluable when they are serving and protecting the community. -
