SOMERSET —
For the first time since 2004, Somerset is 2-0.
The Golden Eagles’ strong start to the season continued with a dominating 28-14 win over the Bishop Carroll Huskies. The game was played in front of a large crowd.
Somerset coach Bob Landis said, “We played an outstanding first half, a great effort, and I am very proud of the effort out there tonight.”
The last time Somerset started with wins in their first two games, the Golden Eagles finished 3-6.
And, as Landis said following the win, “Somerset has never beaten Bishop McCort.”
Against Bishop Carroll, Somerset forced a three-and-out on the first possession and then moved 55 yards in seven plays for its first score – a one-handed catch by Jordan Willkow at the end of a 22-yard pass from Tanner Stull for a 7-0 lead wih 7:46 left in the first quarter.
Somerset’s next possession also resulted in a touchdown as the Golden Eagles went 77 yards on 14 plays and used seven minutes of clock.
Stull and Blake Faulkner dominated the drive as they combined for 51 yards rushing. Stull scored from 20 yards out on an option to the right as he cut inside the tackle.
Bishop Carroll (0-2) scored quickly as it mixed pass and run to make it 14-7 with 5:32 left in the second quarter. David Maruca completed a 37-yard pass to Dane Woo and a 13-yarder to Brody Shuty on the drive before a Marty Lessard 6-yard touchdown run.
The back-and-forth scoring continued on the next drive as Somerset went 61 yards on six plays to take a 21-7 lead before halftime. Stull had runs of 20 and 19 yards on the drive, the latter went for a touchdown.
The Huskies threatened again before a Zach Baker interception ended the scoring opportunity.
After nearly scoring before halftime, Somerset came out in the second half and drove 71 yards on 13 plays for a 28-7 lead. Stull’s 19-yard pass to Baker capped the drive, and the Golden Eagles’ scoring.
Bishop Carroll’s final score came against the Golden Eagles’ second stringers. A 45-yard pass from Maruca to Woo set up Alex Repko’s 11-yard touchdown run.
Somerset held a sizeable 214-64 advantage in rushing yards and a slim 168-163 margin in passing yards. Faulkner finished with 19 carries for 110 yards, while Stull rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries. Lessard led Bishop Carroll with 36 rushing yards.
Huskies coach Greg Snyder said, “We came in with a good game plan and battled, but Somerset played very well. They outphysicaled us.”
