CLYMER —
Winston Redman tried as best as he could to lend a humorous touch to the end of what turned into a laugher.
“I was praying they’d win (the season opener) by 100 points,” said the second-year Conemaugh Valley football coach after the Blue Jays’ 53-6 non-conference loss to reigning District 6 champion Penns Manor on Friday night at Pat Corrigan Field. “We dropped teams (off the schedule) that lost 17 seniors and replaced them with a powerhouse (while playing) with a young football team. So I don’t know how smart that was.”
The Comets, fresh off a season-opening 28-20 loss at Northern Cambria, rolled up 442 yards against Redman’s young and developing Blue Jays. Penns Manor limited Conemaugh Valley to 20 rushing yards. Shane Corson rushed for only 6 yards on four rushes. Quarterback Xavier Butts received few opportunities to run, as his minus-8 yards on four attempts bore out.
“They manhandled us up front,” Redman said. “When you’re starting three freshman and sophomores on offense and on defense it’s a big hill to climb. They’ve got a bunch of veterans over there. Hopefully, we get to where they’re at one day.”
Penns Manor coach Bill Packer understands what Redman is going through, having taken over a program that endured 16 successive non-winning seasons before becoming a Heritage Conference power.
“We feel for them, too,” Packer said. “They’ve had a few losing seasons lately and it’s tough to get back on track. ... It’s going to take him a couple of years, but he’s going to get things turned around over there. And they’re going to have a good football club.
“The key is getting guys out to play. And he’ll start doing that eventually. It takes some time.”
Conemaugh Valley (0-1) played its first full game one week after taking a 40-18 lead against Ferndale in a game that was suspended because of lightning. It will be completed on Sept. 18.
“I didn’t look at it like it (posed) a disadvantage for us to not finish,” Redman said. “We just have to be men about it and go back and finish it the Tuesday after the North Star game. It’s no big deal.”
The Blue Jays’ lone touchdown came late in the first quarter. Nick Roberts found Brandon Galasso on a flea-flicker for a 46-yard scoring pass that cut the difference to 14-6.
By that time, however, the night belonged to Penns Manor, especially senior quarterback Danny Ferens. Needing 125 yards to become Indiana County’s all-time leading rusher, Ferens eclipsed the mark when he rushed 18 yards on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.
Ferens opened the scoring with a 59-yard punt return. He also fired scoring passes to Lucas Kowalski (55 yards) and Corey Brown (80). In all, Ferens rushed for 137 yards and completed 8 of 12 passes for 143 yards.
“You just hope you can contain him,” Redman said. “You’re not going to stop him. You just hope to slow him down.”
Penns Manor (1-1) also received a pair of touchdowns from Cody Byntner and touchdown runs from Kowalski, Chris Henderson and Louie Tate.
“I don’t think anybody in the WestPAC can beat them,” Redman said.
