Glotfelty leads strong Berlin ground game against Portage

PORTAGE — After steamrolling Conemaugh Township 41-6 in week one, Berlin picked up a solid 20-7 win in Portage on Friday night in a key early season WestPAC game.

The Mountaineers controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage throughout the game. Berlin ran 56 plays on offense, and all but four were running plays.

Mountaineers senior quarterback Blake Miller was in control of the offense, which featured heavy I-formation and wildcat sets. Miller scored the eventual game-winning touchdown on a 17-yard run, and intercepted a pass on defense.

Senior halfback Drew Glotfelty was the star of the night, however.  Glotfelty turned in another major effort as he carried the ball 33 times for 221 yards and a touchdown.

Berlin head coach Doug Paul said of his two senior leaders, “Our former players have set a good example for them. Drew and Blake are carrying it on this year.”

Glotfelty virtually did it all for Berlin, even completing a pass for 11 yards and catching a pass for two yards.

Portage coach Gary Gouse said of Glotfelty, “He’s just a stud. They ran him to death, and I can’t blame them. I’d run him too.”

The turning point in the game was a massive 15-play Berlin drive, consisting entirely of running plays.

The drive stole momentum away from Portage, which had just scored to tie the game at 7.

On the series, the Mountaineers picked up five of their 15 first downs and took over six minutes off of the clock.

“It was big. We knew they were getting the ball to start the second half,” Paul said. “I challenged our guys to hold on to the ball and sustain a drive.”

Berlin did just that, and took a 14-7 lead into the locker room.

Portage’s best drive was their first of the second half. The Mustangs ran 11 plays, three of which picked up first downs, but were stopped on fourth down to end the series.

Portage only mustered one first down for the remainder of the game.

Berlin iced the game with an 11-play drive that was capped off by a Nick Stockwell 3-yard touchdown run. A botched snap caused the extra point attempt to fail.

Berlin wasn’t flawless on the night, fumbling the ball five times, three of which were recovered by Portage.

A Mountaineers’ fumble on their own 2-yard line set up Portage’s only score of the game, a Scott Giles 2-yard run.

The Mustangs moved the ball effectively in spots, but were not able to sustain drives. Portage managed only two third-down conversions on eight tries.

While the Mustangs started seven of their eight drives past their own 30-yard line, mistakes essentially cost them scoring chances.

The offensive line allowed three sacks and committed an untimely false start, all of which stalled drives.

Portage senior quarterback Evan Price played well in the loss, completing 8 of his 13 passing attempts for 57 yards. He started the game 5 for 5. Price also ran for 43 yards on 15 carries. Giles carried the ball eight times for 40 yards with a touchdown, and junior Joe Randazzo caught three passes for 42 yards.

Gouse said of his club, “We played the two best teams in the West Pac in back-to-back weeks. I think we proved to people that we’re a good football team. We just need more experience.”

Berlin will take on Ferndale next week at home. Portage travels to Shade.
