CAMPAIGN CORRUPTION TRIAL BEGINS IN PITTSBURGH FOR SUSPENDED STATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE JOAN ORIE MELVIN, SISTER

Jurors will hear opening arguments today in what's expected to be a four-week trial. The sisters are charged with using Melvin's former Superior Court staffers to run her campaigns for the state's highest court in 2003 and 2009.

JURY TO BEGIN DELIBERATING INMATE ABUSE CHARGES AGAINST FIRED STATE PRISON GUARD AFTER GETTING JUDGE'S INSTRUCTIONS

The jury must decide whether 61-year-old Harry Nicoletti physically and sexually preyed on the inmates, most of whom were child molesters, or whether he's become their latest victim as the guard claims the charges against him are lies.

EXTERMINATOR CHARGED IN MURDER OF PHILADELPHIA PEDIATRICIAN

Police say something went inexplicably wrong when 36-year-old Jason Smith began arguing with Dr. Melissa Ketunuti. They say Smith strangled the woman, bound her body then set it on fire, where it was found — still smoldering — in her basement on Monday.

ONE DEAD IN SUBURBAN PHILLY SHOPPING CENTER FIRE

The fire broke out about 11 p.m. Thursday at the Melrose Shopping Center in Cheltenham. One of the victims pulled from the fire later died at a hospital. Investigators believe the fire may have started in a beauty supply store and spread to four other shops.

FRANCISCAN FRIAR LINKED TO OHIO ABUSE SETTLEMENTS NOW TARGET OF INTERNAL INVESTIGATION AT SCHOOL WHERE HE WORKED

Brother Stephen Baker was named last week in legal settlements with 11 men who say they were abused by him at a northeastern Ohio school in the 1980s. Now, Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown is looking into allegations that he may have abused students there in the late 1990s. Baker hasn't commented, but his religious order says he's been removed from public ministry.

    It’s a years-in-the-making step that will allow the estimated $300 million plan to be advertised for bids in the coming weeks – and if all goes well, move it to construction this fall, U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster said Monday.
