Teen charged after tweet leads to evacuation

THROOP — A northeastern Pennsylvania teenager is facing charges over an allegedly threatening post on Twitter that led to the evacuation of a high school basketball game.

Lackawanna County prosecutors say 18-year-old Scranton resident Torre Scrimalli was arraigned Tuesday and charged with two felony counts of making terroristic threats. Investigators say he threatened to blow up two schools if there was a Facebook or Twitter fight over the basketball game between Mid Valley High School and Holy Cross High School on Monday.

About 900 people were evacuated from Mid Valley High School and the game was suspended.

The Times-Tribune of Scranton reports Scrimalli was released on $20,000 unsecured bail. A man who answered the telephone at Scrimalli’s home declined comment Wednesday.

Classes got under way without incident at both schools Tuesday.
