[VIDEO] Crimson Crushers are golden

STATE COLLEGE — The Bishop McCort Catholic High School baseball team brought home the gold on Friday afternoon.

The Crimson Crushers defeated Montgomery High School 14-2 in a five-inning game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on the Penn State campus to claim the PIAA Class A championship.

“This is the best feeling I’ve ever felt,” said senior pitcher Jesse Cooper, who won the game on the mound and had three hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in at the plate.

“We worked so hard to get here, and to do it in that fashion is just a great feeling.”

Coach Chris Pfeil’s team capitalized on six hits and three Montgomery errors in the top of the first inning to build an 8-0 advantage.

Both the Crushers’ PIAA Class A Championship game and the state semifinal victory were shortened by the 10-run mercy rule. McCort scored a combined 31 runs on 31 hits in the past 11 innings the Crushers played in those two contests.

District 6 champion McCort finished the season with a school-record 24 victories and only two losses.

Montgomery, from PIAA District 4, finished 21-3.

“It’s great to be a part of history,” Cooper said. “This has been our goal all year, and it’s great to do this.”

McCort had 13 hits on Friday and played error-free defense. Cooper limited Montgomery to just five hits.

The Red Raiders had outscored their previous four opponents by a combined 21-1 margin.

“I couldn’t be any prouder to be the coach at Bishop McCort,” Pfeil said.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be there. We have great kids and I’m just so happy for them and their families.”
