  Seven emaciated horses were seized recently from a farm in Somerset County after authorities said they were found badly underweight and without food and water.
  An eighth horse had to be put down because of its poor condition.

  The Johnstown man jailed on charges that he stole a $6,000 diamond ring from a store in The Galleria in Richland Township is accused of stealing another ring from a different store in the mall.

• Coupon residents hear choices for curbing sewage problem

  Raw sewage discharge issues are choking the residents of Coupon in Gallitzin Township, as well as their failing sewer system. After a community-wide meeting Wednesday with the State Department of Environmental Protection, engineers and township officials, it was made clear that the whole village needs to work toward a solution.

• Pirates ruin Latos’ winning streak

  Pedro Alvarez singled home a pair of runs in the first inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates ended Mat Latos’ streak of 21 regular-season starts without a loss, beating the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 on Tuesday night.
  Latos (6-1) hadn’t lost a regular-season game since last August, setting a club-record streak of avoiding defeat. He couldn’t overcome Pittsburgh’s three-run first inning.
