HS Basketball in Brief | 12/12/12

BOYS

Conemaugh Valley 64, North Star 39

Nick Roberts had 17 points and 16 rebounds, and Blake Furman had 16 points as Conemaugh Valley beat visiting North Star.

Chris Horten had 14 points for the 1-1 Blue Jays. Devon Richard netted 18 points for 0-1 North Star.

Ferndale 68, Portage 53

Chad Eisenhuth scored 25 points and had seven rebounds as Ferndale beat visiting Portage.

Isaiah Sajatovich had 17 points and Garrett Harrison had 10 for the Jackets. Devin Brown scored 15 points, and Cody Randall had 13 for Portage.

Shade 81, Rockwood 41

CAIRNBROOK – Ryan Fyock scored 30 points, including 14 of 15 on the free-throw line, as Shade defeated visiting Rockwood.

Wade Walker had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Brock Medva had four assists for the Panthers. Fyock also had eight boards and five steals.

Sam Gary led Rockwood with 11 points.

Cambria County Christian, 63 Huntingdon Christian 61

HUNTINGDON – Dom Williams scored 28 points while Tyler Gary and Zach Wingard had 12 each in leading Cambria County Christian.

Brian Kurtz’s game-high 33 points topped the hosts, who got 17 from Jordan Shope.

GIRLS

Southern Fulton 55, Berlin 40

WARFORDSBURG – Aleesa Fieg had 11 points as visiting Berlin fell to Southern Fulton. Ashley Roman had 19 points, and Macey Hollenshead had 15 points for Southern Fulton.

United 33, Saltsburg 29

ARMAGH – Eden Bloom and Wendi Walsh scored 11 points each to lead United.

Bloom also had nine rebounds while teammate Laura Brilhart pulled down six rebounds to go with four steals.

Emily Okopol’s 10 points led Saltsburg. Olivia Satler had nine rebounds, Okopol had five steals and Lisa Prenni, eight rebounds.

Ligonier Valley 59, Homer-Center 49

LIGONIER – Kyra Ludwig scored 20 points and Maddy Grimm had 13 in leading Ligonier.

Maggie McLoughlin’s 27 points topped the Wildcats, who got a dozen from Sydney Horel.

Grimm finished with nine rebounds, Ludwig with five steals and Taylor Rudnik with seven assists.

    Firefighters responded to a house fire at 10:22 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Spinner Road in Munster Township. The Red Cross is assisting the family. The state police fire marshal has been called to investigate. Fire companies responding were Cresson, Loretto, Dauntless and Nanty Glo.

    Through three scoreless innings at Point Stadium, the Altoona Rail Birds held their own against Martella’s Pharmacy in a AAABA League interleague contest.
    But Martella’s patience at the plate and aggressiveness on the base paths turned a close game into a 10-run mercy rule affair on Tuesday.

    Pedro Alvarez singled home a pair of runs in the first inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates ended Mat Latos’ streak of 21 regular-season starts without a loss, beating the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 on Tuesday night.
    Latos (6-1) hadn’t lost a regular-season game since last August, setting a club-record streak of avoiding defeat. He couldn’t overcome Pittsburgh’s three-run first inning.

    Through social media, Dog Hollow Speedway in Strongstown - located close to the Indiana/Cambria county line - announced on Monday evening that it would no longer be in operation.
