Apollo Award recipient chosen

JOHNSTOWN — The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, along with the Cambria County Medical Society, Conemaugh Health System, Windber Medical Center and Lee Initiatives, has recognized the late Dr. Frank Carney as the recipient of the 12th annual Apollo Award.

The award is given annually to a member of (or family member of) the medical community who has made significant contributions to improving the quality of life in our region. It is designed to encourage and acknowledge participation by the medical community in initiatives that go beyond the health care professional’s normal scope of work.

Carney’s professional and community-based achievements spanned five decades and included service to the Cambria County War Memorial Board, CVMH Board of Trustees, Dale National Bank and Cenwest National Bank (First Commonwealth) boards, Westmont Recreation Committee, Westmont school board, Penns Woods Council Boy Scouts and Cambria County Community College (Penn Highlands) board.

The Apollo Awards dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Oct. 25 at the Holiday Inn in downtown Johnstown.

Also to be recognized at the dinner are winners of the Apollo scholarships.

The scholarships are awarded annually through the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies’ Medical Community Endowment Fund.

The $5,000 awards are given to third and fourth-year medical students who have expressed an interest in returning to the area to practice medicine, upon graduation. Applications are available at www.cfalleghenies.org, and are due July 15.
