Students searched after bullet found at school

SCRANTON — Students at a northeastern Pennsylvania high school were searched this week, days after the discovery of a bullet that turned out to be from a starter pistol.

The bullet was found by maintenance staff at West Scranton High School on Friday. School officials say police later determined it came from a starter pistol, which is used to start track races, but they decided to go through with the planned search anyway.

Superintendent William King tells The Times-Tribune no weapons were found in the search. Due to the President's Day holiday, Tuesday was the first day students were in school since the discovery of the bullet. Officials don't know where it came from.

King says students were given letters Tuesday to explain why the search was conducted.
