Ligonier Valley hammers United

LIGONIER — Ryan Torrance scored rushing touchdowns on four consecutive possessions, including three in the first quarter, for Ligonier Valley as the Rams routed United, 63-0, in a Heritage Conference game on Friday night.

Torrance scored on runs of 11, 33, 44 and 2 yards and rushed for more than 100 yards in the first quarter alone.

A senior and the Rams’ lone returning two-way starter from last year’s 8-3 team, Torrance scored three touchdowns for Ligonier Valley (2-0) before United (0-2) recorded its initial first down of the game, which came on the last play of the first quarter.

Connor Maust opened the scoring for Ligonier Valley with a 10-yard run.

In the second quarter, the Rams went to the air for a pair of big plays. Junior quarterback Scott Fennell, making his second start at the position, threw touchdown passes of 28 and 42 yards to tight end Alec Bloom. The latter score came with one minute remaining in the second quarter and it gave the Rams a 49-0 lead.

With the 35-point mercy rule in effect for the entire second half, Ligonier Valley still managed a pair of big plays.

Levi Gaynor returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter 80 yards for a touchdown and Patrick Waugh capped the scoring in the third quarter with an interception return, which came only a couple plays after the kickoff return.

Maddy Grimm went 9 for 9 on extra-point attempts.
