Science pupils give demonstration for school board

— The Westmont Hilltop school board saw firsthand how the next group of scientists is being molded.

Two fourth-graders at Westmont Hilltop Elementary School – Lauren Mock and Lakyn Davis – were chosen by their teacher to demonstrate to the school directors how the science fair in which they and 140 classmates participated benefited them.

Lauren, through her project titled “Do You See What I See,” explained that she set out to determine if boys and girls saw optical illusions in the same way or came away with different conclusions. The results of her test showed that there was no difference.

Lakyn told the board Monday that in her project she studied families to see what was the dominant trait.

Board President Diana Schroeder said she was amazed by the level of scientific inquiry of which the students are capable.

“The science fair was a wonderful event that fostered interest and enthusiasm in science,” Schroeder said.

Elementary school Principal Ted Benning said the science fair was an excellent opportunity for the community to see the progress and success of the pupils in science.

The science fair was not a competition, but rather an opportunity for pupils to explore the scientific process and show their creativity, he said.

Teachers Gloria LaMonaca and Tammy Williams went above and beyond the call of duty in organizing a fine program, Benning said.

Tracy Davis, Lakyn’s mother, said the pupils did a great job.

Jen Mock, Lauren’s mother, said the event showed the families of the 140 pupils how much the children are learning at school.

In other matters, board member Michele Trevorrow said that the Westmont Hilltop Community Team is getting ready for a fund-raising event April 12 at the former Johnstown Brewing Co. at 942 Pinegrove Lane in Southmont.

Called the “Night of Community ‘Spirits,’ ” the event will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. More information is available at Facbook.com/WestmontHilltopCommunityTeam.
