St. Vincent de Paul raising funds for high traffic Family Kitchen

JOHNSTOWN — The sink is too small. The floor is hard, cold concrete. The appliances are old. Space is cramped.

Still, the local Society of St. Vincent de Paul organization manages to serve about 200 meals a day to needy members of the community out of its well-worn Family Kitchen at 231 Bedford St. in downtown Johnstown.

No doubt, though, an upgrade is needed.

So, recently, the society started a fund drive to raise money for its kitchen revitalization project.

“We’re just to the point where it’s not working any more,” said Sonny Consiglio, executive director of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown’s St. Vincent de Paul chapter.

“We just feel we need a full kitchen.”

Greg Karcher, the kitchen manager, added, “We’re just working in a very small facility. It’s as small as somebody’s kitchen at home.”

St. Vincent hopes to raise $450,000. If the goal is met, a completely new kitchen – from ovens and freezers to wiring and sinks – will be installed.

Consiglio understands that such a lofty goal will be challenging to meet in the current tough financial climate.

“It’s a very difficult time with the economy being what it is,” he said. “We honestly believe that, talking to people in the community, it can be done.”

St. Vincent has raised $150,000 so far for the project.

The society will receive help from participants in the John B. Gunter Community Leadership Initiative, an organization that helps promote volunteerism.

Anyone interested in contributing to the kitchen remodeling project can contact the society at 539-4627 (main office), 539-7811 (kitchen) or avcdepaul@atlanticbb.net.
