The Greater Johnstown school board on Tuesday received an update from its superintendent on a bid to obtain federal funding to improve education.
Applications from school districts will be accepted over the next few months for the Race to the Top program, Superintendent Gerald Zahorchak said.
Previously, only states could apply for the grants, he said.
About 45 to 50 grants are expected to be awarded to districts. An estimated 900 districts nationwide are expected to submit an application, he said.
The grant for a district the size of Greater Johnstown could be between $1 million and $2 million a year for multiple years, he said.
“It would be a big help,” he said.
The grant would help with the district’s efforts to add value to achievement outcomes for students, he said. Value is defined as a student gaining more than a year’s worth of achievement for a year’s worth of instruction, he said.
In another matter, Zahorchak told the board that the high school staff and the district’s food services supplier worked hard to identify additional students who qualify for reduced lunches.
The increase of 8 percent will have good implications for many of the federal grants of which the district applies, he said.
The percentage of students who qualify for the reduced-lunch program is a key factor in getting approval for grants for technology and academic programs, Zahorchak said.
