Dozens of volunteers worked for hours to rescue a calf that had fallen into an old mine shaft.
WTAE-TV reported firefighters and animal welfare officials used an excavator to help pull the animal out of a 16-foot-deep hole on Monday. Rescuers in Westmoreland County said they first sent down food to the calf. Then they lowered ropes to latch onto the animal, which was extricated from the hole after a few attempts.
It’s not clear how long the calf had been stuck in the shaft in Ligonier Township.
