Former church manager accused of stealing more than $100,000

CLYMER — A former Cambria County man allegedly stole more than $100,000 from the Indiana County church where he worked as business manager, authorities said.

In a court document, state police in Indiana allege that Daniel Michael Yasick, 37, of Heilwood, took the money from Church of The Resurrection in Clymer between 2008 and 2011.

Troopers said he shredded documents and forged records to cover his tracks.

A church minister became suspicious after Yasick failed for months to provide him with financial records.

Yasick’s arrest caps an eight-month investigation that included a forensic audit by Wessel and Co.

Authorities said they recovered a returned check made payable to Daniel Yasick for $3,648.12 for “reimbursement computer” but no computer was purchased.

The ledger for one check was made out to M&T Contracting for $7,000. But the check from the bank was instead made out to cash, police said. Another check was made out to American Express for $4,789.70, but the church has no such account, troopers said.

Yasick also allegedly used the church’s Lowe’s credit card for personal expenses, troopers said.

The investigation found that Yasick allegedly misappropriated $108,245.52. He also allegedly failed to pay vendors and as of Jan. 31, 2012, the church owed its vendors more than $236,000, troopers said.

Yasick was charged with 50 counts each of theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception and receiving stolen property.

Yasick, formerly of the West Carroll Township village of Elmora, also was charged with 24 counts of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, eight counts of fraudulent destruction, six counts of forgery and one count each of tampering with records and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Yasick was arraigned by District Judge George Thachik of Clymer and freed on $75,000 unsecured bond.
