Pittsburgh man claiming mistaken ID in shooting

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police have been trying to determine whether a man was telling the truth when he claimed to have fatally shot a friend because he thought the man was an intruder.

Police have not released the name of the man who they say shot 25-year-old Andrew Broadie, of Penn Hills.

Police say Broadie was shot shortly after entering a home in the city’s Garfield neighborhood.

The man who shot Broadie tells police he went to retrieve a rifle when he heard banging at the door and that he shot Broadie when he came back with the gun because he thought the victim was an intruder. Police say it appears, instead, that Broadie was a friend who merely entered the home through an unlocked back door about 5 p.m. Sunday.

Police were still investigating Monday.
