NICKTOWN —
Some parents of students attending Bishop McCort Catholic High School will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at the Richland Fire Hall to discuss action late last week placing high school Principal Ken Salem on leave.
The hope of parents organizing the meeting is to discuss their options and request a formal meeting with the school board.
Those representing the group said they hope to get some answers regarding Salem and the board’s actions.
Salem was placed on administrative leave with pay Friday, according to a statement in an email sent to members of its community.
No reason was given for the decision, and the statement said no further comment would be made because it is a personnel matter.
Assistant Principal D.A. Gardill was named to the position of acting principal.
In recent weeks, Bishop McCort has been named in a series of civil lawsuits by former students alleging they were sexually molested by Brother Stephen Baker, a Franciscan friar who worked at the school from 1992 to the early 2000’s.
Salem was not a principal at the school during the time Baker was employed as a religion instructor and worked on the athletic department and no mention of Baker was made in the board’s statement.
However, in a statement on Salem’s behalf, George W. Bills, Jr., said his client did not know Baker and he has been shocked and grieved to learn of the incidents.
While Baker was at the school it was operated as part of the Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. In 2008 the school became independent of the diocese.
