District 5 and 6 soccer playoffs for boys and girls get underway this week.
Area squads in District 6 open on Thursday.
In the boys brackets, Westmont Hilltop is the top seed in Class A, while Bellefonte is No. 1 in Class AA.
The Hilltoppers face No. 4 Penns Valley on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. at Richland High School in a semifinal contest. The other boys semifinal is Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Point Stadium as No. 2 Bishop McCort plays No. 3 Belleville Mennonite. The championship will be held on Nov. 1 at Trojan Stadium.
In Class AA boys quarterfinals, No. 5 Richland is at fourth-seeded Bald Eagle Area, No. 7 Cambria Heights is at second-seeded Philipsburg Osceola and No. 6 Bishop Carroll faces No. 3 Tyrone in the early game at Philipsburg. The other game has Juniata taking on the Red Raiders. The semifinals are Oct. 30 with the championship on Nov. 1 at Hollidaysburg.
In Class A girls, Bishop McCort is the top seed and Richland is ranked second. Both squads open in semifinal action on Oct. 30 with the championship at Trojan Stadium on Nov.1.
In Class AA, the girls of Forest Hills hold the top spot and will play Tuesday’s Tyrone/Huntingdon winner in the quarters Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The other quarterfinal games, all on Thursday, include No. 5 Bedford against fourth-seeded Westmont Hilltop at 8 p.m. at Richland, No. 6 Somerset against third-seeded Ligonier Valley at Forest Hills in the 5:30 game and Juniata at second-seeded Bellefonte. The semifinals are Oct. 30 with the title game at Hollidaysburg on Nov. 1.
In District 5, eight Class A boys and girls teams advance into the playoffs, which are set to open on Saturday.
The cutoff date for the playoffs is Tuesday and the final rankings will be out on Wednesday.
Currently in the Class A boys rankings, Northern Bedford holds the top spot with a 14-2 record. Conemaugh Township, North Star and Windber hold the next three positions. McConnellsburg, Fannett-Metal, Rockwood and Hope For Hyndman currently hold the final four slots.
In the Class A girls bracket, Conemaugh Township is 14-2 and in the No. 1 position. Berlin, North Star and McConnellsburg are in slots two through four. Chestnut Ridge, Tussey Mountain, Rockwood and Meyersdale or Everett round out the field.
In Class AA boys, Bedford and Somerset will play in the title game, which is set for Oct. 30.
State golf
Two individuals and one team will represent the area this week in the PIAA Class AA Golf Tournament held at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. The individual tournament tees off today at 8:30 a.m.
Richland’s Brady Moran and Max Kirsch of Central Cambria, both seniors, will compete in the individual tournament, which is two rounds and concludes on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Kirsch and Red Devils teammates Jeremy Eckenrode, Sam Stevens, Dom Stevens and Gabe Seymour will battle for the Class AA team title.
