Philly man sentenced for raping 5-year-old godson

PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia man will serve 36 to 72 years in prison for sexually abusing his godson after offering to take care of the boy for his financially struggling mother.

A judge sentenced 45-year-old Eric Maloy on Friday. Maloy was convicted in December of raping his godson, who was 5 years old at the time of the assaults.

Maloy began abusing the boy after offering to care for him because his mother couldn’t afford to send him to camp.

Prosecutors say Maloy had several previous arrests on child rape charges, and even a homicide charge, but was never convicted in those cases. The district attorney’s office says Maloy bribed witnesses and sent victims to distant locations before the trial dates.

Prosecutors say two alleged prior victims testified at this trial.
